The American Red Cross, Northeast Wisconsin Region is dedicated to providing relief to victims of disasters and in helping people prevent, prepare for and respond to emergencies. Encompassing the Northeast corner of the state of Wisconsin and reaching into the Upper Peninsula of Michigan, the region services 19 counties with a total population of 1,176,995 individuals. The six chapters that make up the region include the East Central Wisconsin Chapter, Fond du Lac County Chapter, Lakeland Chapter, Manitowoc-Calumet Chapter, Neenah-Menasha Chapter and the Outagamie Chapter. All chapters provide Disaster Services, International Services, Service to the Armed Forces and Health & Safety Education. Many chapters also have their own unique community programs that address identified needs within their communities. Examples of these include rental, food or transportation assistance to qualifying individuals.

We opened The Knitting Nest to share our passion for yarn and hand-crafting with knitters and crocheters in Waupaca County and surrounding areas.  Catherine has been knitting and Patrick has been crocheting for the last ten years. While we are not opening a yarn shop primarily to support their (OK, Catherine’s) yarn addiction, it certainly is a welcome by-product!  We have solid, workhorse yarns (wool, cotton, acrylic, and blends) from Cascade Yarns and Universal Yarns, but we also make sure to keep around some “yummy” yarns just to keep life interesting.  And since wool is such an important part of many yarn-lovers’ lives, we carry yarn from sheep raised locally (at Lamb’s Quarters) and spun by Blue Hills Alpaca Farm and Fiber Mill (in Bruce, WI).  We also have all the notions, needles, and knick-knacks that every yarn crafter needs - and at reasonable prices (so that we can buy more yarn!). Among the knick-knacks you’ll find not only commercial buttons, but glass buttons handmade locally at Blessings-Glassworks.

The Knitting Nest supports our local crafters by providing a place where you can stop in and knit or crochet a few rows, chat with others, or just hang out.  The sofa in our front room is there to be used!  We will offer beginning knitting and crochet classes regularly and will also offer intermediate level classes for those who want to do more intricate things with yarn.  And, every Thursday night is Open Stitch Night at The Knitting Nest!  Just bring yourself and whatever project you’re working on and you’ll be sure to find some pleasant company.  Even if you don’t have a project going at the moment, just come by to visit.  You’re always welcome!
